She stared at him, trying to process what was happening. He had planned this entire elaborate evening. He had chosen this expensive restaurant. He had insisted on the costly wine selection.
He was the one who kept repeating, “Tonight is going to be special.”
And now he expected her to contribute one hundred and ninety dollars?
Money itself wasn’t his concern. He could easily pay his half of the bill. That wasn’t the problem at all.
“This seems odd to me,” she said carefully, choosing her words. “You planned this whole evening for Valentine’s Day. Why should I have to pay half for the special date you invited me on?”
His jaw tightened noticeably.
“This is a true collaboration,” he said firmly. “We are equals in this relationship, aren’t we?”
“Of course,” she replied. “But true collaboration isn’t about splitting the cost of a surprise dinner you planned specifically for me.”
The atmosphere at their table changed drastically. Suddenly, the background music felt intrusive and too loud.
For several seconds, they stared at each other without saying anything.
The Sudden Departure That Changed Everything
Then, he made a small gesture toward the waitress. She approached the table silently.
He handed her his card without saying anything to his girlfriend.
He paid the full bill without exchanging another word.
No discussion. No discussion. No explanation.
He got up from the table.
“See you soon,” he said in a monotonous, emotionless tone.
And then, he simply left the restaurant.
So, without looking back.
She stood there completely paralyzed, feeling a heat rising up her neck, and her hands began to tremble uncontrollably.
I couldn’t understand what had just happened. Was it some kind of power play? Did he expect me to chase after him? To apologize for something?
The sounds of the restaurant faded around her. She felt deeply humiliated and exposed in front of strangers.
It was then that the waitress slowly approached the table again.
The woman seemed extremely uncomfortable.
“I’m so sorry,” she said softly, almost in a whisper. “I don’t think I should keep this to myself.”
A feeling of dread gripped her stomach.
“He left this note for you before he left.”
The waitress handed him a folded piece of paper.
His hands trembled as he carefully unfolded it and began to read.
